Makassar reef is a shallow dive site (mostly <20m) covered with coral rubble interspersed by rocky ridges and coral bommies. The site is located in a narrow strait which concentrates the tidal currents attracting mantas and other rays as they can position themselves in the current and let plankton rich water rush over their gills where they filter out the food. It is also an area where there are a lot of cleaning fish. Unfortunately, July is not prime Manta season and we did not see any here.

21 July Dive 3 – depth 19m, 43 min, medium to strong current, 20m vis
Our dive was in a strong falling tide and I found the second part of the dive very challenging as we were drifting across the falling tidal flow. However, the first part of the dive was beautiful, especially watching the white reef tip sharks on the first ridge. Read more in my post here Day 2 blog
